Extinguishers: differences between powder, CO₂ and foam — which one to choose?

Extinguishers are a fire safety essential. But not all of them are suited to the same situations. So, is it better to choose a powder, CO₂ or foam extinguisher?
🔴 Powder extinguisher
- Areas of application: class A (solids), B (liquids) and C (gases) fires.
- Advantages: versatile, effective, unaffected by frost.
- Disadvantages: leaves residue that is hard to clean up, can damage electronic equipment.
⚫ CO₂ extinguisher
- Areas of application: electrical fires, flammable liquid fires.
- Advantages: does not damage equipment, leaves no trace.
- Disadvantages: limited effectiveness on solid fires, risk of asphyxiation in confined spaces.
⚪ Foam extinguisher
- Areas of application: class A and B fires.
- Advantages: cools and smothers the fire, very effective against flammable liquids.
- Disadvantages: not suited to electrical fires, sensitive to frost.
The choice depends on your environment:
- Offices and premises with IT equipment: CO₂.
- Industry and areas with varied risks: powder.
- Petrol stations, liquid storage warehouses: foam.
