Commissioning

Commissioning a fire hose reel (FHR) involves a few quick, simple steps, allowing for an effective response in the event of a fire:

• Open the supply valve to activate the water flow.
• Unwind the hose (only the length needed to reach the fire).
• Form an "S" shape with the hose on the ground to make it easier to move around and avoid kinks during use.
• Aim the jet at the flames to extinguish or contain the fire.

The different types of fire hose reels

There are several types of fire hose reels, classified according to the internal diameter of the hose:

• FHR DN19: used in premises with standard risk (offices, schools, commercial buildings).
• FHR DN25: suited to areas with specific risks (laboratories, technical rooms...).

Inspection and maintenance of fire hose reels

To ensure they work properly, all fire hose reels must undergo a mandatory annual inspection. This inspection covers:

• The pressure test
• The general condition of the hose and couplings
• The proper operation of the valve and nozzle
• The condition of seals and accessories

Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the responsiveness and reliability of the device in an emergency.

Fire hose reels (FHR)

The fire hose reel, or FHR, is a first-response piece of equipment designed to quickly tackle a fire outbreak while waiting for more powerful means to arrive. It is described as "armed" because it is permanently connected to the water mains, which makes it immediately operational in an emergency.

The FHR consists of a semi-rigid hose 20 to 30 metres long, wound onto a fixed or swivelling wall-mounted reel. At its end, a nozzle allows a choice between two jet modes:

• The straight jet (or "stick" jet), effective for reaching the heart of the fire and cooling it quickly.
• The spray jet, ideal for cooling surrounding surfaces and preventing the flames from spreading.
