The right reflexes to adopt in the event of a fire outbreak
Published on 4 February 2026

A fire can break out at any moment: a short circuit, carelessness, an overheating appliance… In these critical moments, the first few minutes are decisive. Knowing and applying the right reflexes can save lives.
Step 1: Raise the alarm immediately
At the very first signs (smoke, a suspicious smell, flames), it is essential to alert the emergency services and trigger the fire alarm system. This helps to:
- Warn all occupants.
- Trigger the evacuation.
- Reduce the fire brigade's response time.
Step 2: Evacuate without panicking
- Follow the evacuation plans displayed on the premises.
- Never use the lifts.
- Close doors behind you to slow the spread of smoke.
- Head to the designated assembly point.
Step 3: Use first-response equipment
If the fire is still limited and poses no immediate danger:
- Use a suitable extinguisher (powder, CO₂ or foam, depending on the type of fire).
- Use an FHR if available.
- Always act without putting yourself in danger.
Step 4: Protect yourself from smoke
Smoke is more dangerous than flames.
- Cover your mouth with a damp cloth.
- Stay low to the ground to avoid inhaling smoke.
- Never open a hot door: a sign that there is fire on the other side.
The right reflexes in the event of fire are simple, but must be repeated and internalised by all occupants.
The regular training courses and drills organised by La P.I.P.E. ensure that your teams will know how to respond calmly and effectively.
