Fire hose reel (FHR): role, operation and regulations

The Fire Hose Reel (FHR) is an essential system in many establishments. Always operational, it enables an immediate response in the event of fire.
Role of the FHR
The FHR provides a first response before the fire brigade arrives. It is designed to:
- Provide a constant pressurised water flow.
- Allow a rapid, sustained response.
Operation and components
- Semi-rigid hose, 20 to 30 metres long, mounted on a reel.
- Continuous water supply.
- Nozzle allowing a choice between a straight jet (direct attack) or a spray jet (cooling).
Types of FHR
- DN19: premises with standard risk.
- DN25: premises with specific risks.
- DN33: industrial sites and classified installations.
Regulations and maintenance
- Mandatory in public-access buildings, high-rise buildings and industrial sites.
- Annual inspection: pressure, condition of seals, operation of the reel.
